Confidentiality in Counselling – General
Confidentiality in counselling means that you can speak with me knowing that your friends, your family,people at work don’t get to learn what you have said in a counselling session . Equally importantly neither will my friends, family etc. However it does mean I may (whilst preserving your anonymity) discuss your case with a limited number of other professionals for ethical and professional reasons.
This will be for
- Clinical supervision – which allows me to be more effective and professional
- Continued Professional Development(CPD) – which allows me to maintain and expand by levels of knowledge and understanding.
- The UK Law – which requires me to disclose if I believe there is a likelihhod that you may harm others or yourself
I abide by and adhere to the ethical framework of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy); the code of conduct of the NCP (National Council of Psychotherapists) and the code of ethics of the APHP (Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy)
This means, I practice confidentiality in counselling and in all of my clinical work.
In Practice this means I will, from time to time discuss our work with my supervisor . Or might discuss our work with other professionals during CPD. (continuing professional development) I will preserve your anonymity be referring to you under a case name not your real name, during CPD I will not discuss your case in any detailed way.
Confidentiality in Counselling – The Law.
Confidentiality sometimes has to be broken if I am required to do so by law (for example if you disclose to me your intent of harming yourself or others (including children) or if you disclose intent of committing a serious criminal offence or terrorism). I will attempt to express to you first my intent to break confidentiality of our work before I do so. However the law may require that I take action first and without your consent.
Counselling is a courageous step and confidentiality in counselling is an important part of what it has to offer.
