This diivision between the ideas that the left have of the right and the right of the left or new labour of old and vice versa, needs to stop, there is no them and us in the Labour party, only us.
I dont think anyone wants to lose or go back and relive the past. I as there like many of you when they all left because they had lost an argument, a not very good argument at that, and created the SDP. I was there when David Owens arrogance matched Michael Foots so called Donkey Jacket….all meaningless in the end, while we bickered the Tories had Policy and put it into practise. Don’t comment this entry with negatives, be constructive, tell us what you would do to make Labour Successful. I for one want to hear.
I like this from Raymond Williams: “It wasn’t idealism that made me, from the beginning, want a more secure and rational society. It was an intellectual judgement, to which I still hold. When I was young its name was socialism. We can be deflected by names. But the need was absolute, and is still absolute.”
With regard to comments on tax: in a number of ways the wealthy need taxing more, and yet the majority are probably wealthier than they were, so other systems of tax are difficult to impose. What we need is a tax system that appears to be fair both to those at the top and those at the bottom. Yes one will subsidise the other, but this subsidy in reality works both ways I think inheritance tax as it stands does not work, and is unfair, i think income tax needs overhauling and community charge would benefit from being mixed with a local income tax, some of which went back to a central pot. As I have said before another tax band is needed for those on higher incomes, any more than 50% is daft Local issues need to be taken into account Sussex for example has the highest number of over 65s per capita in the country, this puts a strain on local services. To me now the rants of right and left are not worth the hot air, we need a moral crusade that everyone can get behind, and we need to get out of the middle of the road. We need leadership that leads not that is determined by what marketing and PR people say that the people think they want from a leader.
We need to be socially radical and fiscally prudent, we need new philosophers and idealists, we need to attempt the impossible, and appear to work miracles for both those in comfort and those on the edge, we need leadership that is secure & comfortable and yet we need to be different.
I would love to hear honest comment on what would radical change would help renew the Labour Party and give it greater and deeper popularity.
