Who would work in IT at Christmas, most people using computers in your company aren’t actually working they are either browsing for presents on the net or actually buying them, or doing their grocery or lingerie shopping. Whilst doing this they take their eye of the ball and either delete important files from a server or infect your system with the latest killer virus.
Working in IT you can never get it right. Either the world is rosy and people begin to wonder what it is you do exactly as the system works perfectly, or else its all wrong and why wasn’t someone their to fix it yesterday.
Of course there are the people who work for your comapany that got the job on the promise that they knew all these applications and had worked with them for years, but continue to ask you when you are dealing with a major network emergency…”how to do you open/launch word again”.
For the 24/7 people who must keep a system safe and secure at all costs, this can mean Christmas working, so spare a thought for them.
The there’s the secret santa thing, why do people assume that if you work in IT you are some kind of grunt, that would not appreciate a decent present, and the show stopper is the party where you meet that beautiful HR executive, or the arty graphics manager and no matter your degree in art history and your time in the sorbonne, its a question of oh yes you’re the IT….Manager/Engineer/Director/Administrator…..oh look theres Dave from sales.
The only payback is you know all their dirty secrets, its why you should never sack anyone in IT, as they know where the bodies are buried and the baies are born….in this case a manger is not a blade system running linux.
