My mother said in an argument between a husband and wife, there is the person that is right…. and the husband.

More seriously we discussed it. I have been adamant about vaccines for some time, and i still dont really know whether they work or not or damage your child. We shall see.

I am also interested in how Michel Foucaults lectures of the 1970s wherein he mentions the new struggle is between local knowledge and total knowledge, has come to fruition in the arguments over vaccinations. No matter how much, the bio medical pharmaceutical health world proves they are safe and will not harm your child, locally you can always meet someone who swears their child was fine until they had MMR. And to be honest I do need a man or women in a suit or a white coat to tell me its alright, memebers of my community appear more trsutworthy.

So we both admitted we were scared about getting the baby jabbed. I emailed my sister who gave me some interesting advice….she said she had not had her first two kids vaccinated and then they had both caught whooping cough and it had scared her as one of her children had not been able to eat properly as she vomitted her food because of the coughing…it went on for 4 months. So all her other kids had all the shots except MMR.

However she did also say she has 2 friends with autisitic kids who swear they were Ok before the MMR jab! See above my reference to Foucault.

The internet is now overloaded with information and who knows what to beleive, there are arguments for and against that seem plausible. When are they going to do plausible research into the dangers of these vaccines and also whether they work and on what percentage they work on. Also the long term effects of these. What of the dangers of contaminated vaccines …?

So we took her and got the DPT jab, thats the one for whooping cough, diptheria, polio etc. I hated it and kept expecting her to drop dead go catatonic or develop some horrible disease. Actually she was fine. She is breast fed, her mum has AB blood and an incredible immune system…she even admitted later she had whopping cough as a kid. Lets hope it all turns out OK.

Having now gone down both paths I am a little confused. Especially as now I realise that both sides do a PR job for their side of the argument….I read somewhere that before school a child will have had 74 vaccines…is tat right can anyone tell me what they are. Also can anyone tell me if more people die or have compications from the vaccines than the diseases they protect you from. Why do we immunise from measles, mumps and Rubella….is it that pregnancy thing, or to do with fertility, or is it death rates…. If they were really so bothered about that wouldn’t they just remove plastics from active use in society, make us drive slower, ban drinking more than 2 units of alchohol a day, provide free health care for all, ban smoking all together and so on….or is it that like most things these days, somewhere at the back of all of this is a money making exercise…

If you are making a decision about vaccination try to look at as much as possible from BOTH sides and stay healthily sceptical, ask friends and family and try to make an informed decision. We do live in a soft world in the “west” where we dont see alot of death and illness. If you dont get your kids vaccinated, could you cope with it if your child got measles or whooping cough, if you do them vaccinated can you cope with the chance of them becoming mildly ill, or possibly having a reaction to the vaccine, do you have a plan if it does happen.
