Sell or share (against the ‘Boot Fair’)

so I  am moving house to the most beautiful place and with my new partner, so it is a great opportunity and the beginning of a new adventure.

In the Packing and clearing up I realised i had a lot of things I did not realy need anymore, but might be of use to others, and so did my partner.  So we put them out side our respective gates and front doors with a notice saying “please take” or “no longer needed”, and shelves, tables, chairs were gone in no time.

We could have taken the trouble to sell them at what is know in the UK as a boot fair or car boot sale ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_boot_sale ) but we tried the sharing instead of the selling route and it was better.

When I was a child (oh those fateful words) there were no car boot sales, and people handed things on, they passed on clothes and bikes and furniture and all sorts of other things, it was what built community, the process of sharing, but the 1980s and Thatcherism/Reagonomics taught us that we were partners in the Capitalist dream, that everything could be sold, and money could be made everywhere, even from your neighbour. It was and is the great lie.

Sharing things binds us together, it creates bonds of humanity rather than relationships of profit and loss.  It is what those that have the money and power fear the most, that those they exploit the most will not follow in their image but share and bind together, to make their own and a better world.

Oh yes its idealistic, but we seem to have lost our way with ideals and been told that cynicism is the way forward.  And because they are not to be trusted they want us to beleive no one can be trusted…everything you give out will be returned to you a hundred or a thousand fold….the smile you give out comes back to you.
