Voting Conservative – The Thatcher Legacy

The Legacy of Mrs Thatcher and 1980s Right Wing Government

There has been much said recently about the legacy of Mrs Thatcher, Thatcherism, Reaganomics and so on, because it was 25 years since her conservative government was elected in the UK.

Often we hear of the wonderful things she did to help the entrepeneurial spirit rise again, and give Britian back it sback bone, curtial Union Power and oversee the Privatisation prgramme for nationalised Industry….blah blah blah

Nothing is said of the incredible mass unemployment, the poverty she inflicted on us and in breaking the Unions to thriust forward her idea and energy for the entrepeneur she made ordinary working peoples lives very difficult…

Now we have David Cameron trying to ditch this image of conservativism, but scratch the service and they are as always low tax low care high society politicians.

The fall out from Conservative government is many of the privatised industries are run very badly and for the shareholder but not the customer, and in order to pay sharehholders dividends it is the employee who suffers by being encouraged to work unofficially long hours not take proper breaks and so on, but this time around this is a side issue to my main thought…

There is now an industry based around women aged 34-55 and over to find them partners…and I see this as a direct result of conservative politics. Women in order to succeed have taken on traditional mens attitudes: tough in the baord room, active sports, drink, travel, and early retirement. These women of success get it at a price, they have no real time to put into relationships, and when they do look for realtionships they want a reflection of themselves (then again perhaps we all do), they want a boardroom guy, yet they want sensitivity, emotions, feeling, equality of earnings and so on. There are men like this but they are few and far between. And so an industry has been built up to funnel guys towards these women of success, there are a plethora of dating websites, and dating organisations where the ultimate relationship can be sold. As if an intimate personal relationship was really something you could buy!!

The problem of this is the world has moved on and many men, myself included are tired of being cast in this business role, while women have only recently discovered it and succeeded within it.

I don’t want to work from 7 to 7 for the sake of money and all it can buy. As someone said in a recent interview I went to at a top UK PR company, I was not the right ‘cultural fit’. Perhaps I am the oddity, I am not into cars and who won the Grand Prix, I like football but alos poetry, perhasp we are all a mix of things but are encouraged by magazines, TV and the dating industry to stereotype ourselves and the people we desire as partners. However I laugh to myself as I see these women in the mold of Mrs Thatcher in their suits for business or their wacky designer gear for creativity, driving fast cars, talking of work hard and play hard ( the crappiest clcihe that ever crossed an HR -thats personnel to you- Depts threshold )travel to exotic places and success and achievement.

All of these things are fine in their own right, but just what have you succeeded in and what is it you have acheived. OK OK, maybe I am talking the politics of envy, so if you out there .com Millionairess, pick me up at 8 in the Maserati and we’ll fly to Borneo in the morning, back in time for tea and some tough descisions in the boardroom, or is that the bedroom.

Seriously though as the UK elections loom, however anti war I am, I cannot consider being part of giving this country another dose of the conservatives, who do not beleive in social democracy, fairness for all and open minded attitudes for people whatever their gender race, sex, or ethnic background. That is the ultimate legacy of Mrs Thatcher…NEVER AGAIN
