Ordinary or Extraordinary

Jung and the Two Types of Patients

I once read that Jung said he had only two types of patients…the ordinary that wished to be extraordinary and the extraordinary that wished to be ordinary….in some way it was an inspiration for this site, a celebration of the wisdom of the ordinary.

The site started as a joke, which is often the way we chose to express ourselves when we are unsure, it then took on a life of its own in a very ordinary way and has gone on from there, I get a lot of hits but only a few will really engage.

I have just come in from sitting in the sun in my garden because I has thought of really the most ordinary thing…we are encouraged not to talk to ourselves, but i want to encourage the opposite.

It strikes me from looking at my own children and remembering my own childhood that we lose site of ourselves as children (just think of someone telling you not to be so childish) somehow childhood becomes a little denigrated. What I will suggest is something, that has become more poular in therapy circles and that is building a relationship with the child you were and the child you are (sometimes called the inner child). Its a very ordinary thing but has extra ordinary results.

Just start by asking your inner child what would make them happy, imagine you as a child, get a photo of you as a child if it helps and ask again, if you have never spoken to that inner child, then don’t forget to apologise for being out of contact.

Perhaps you had a difficult or abusive childhood then tell your inner child they are safe now, meet them in your minds eye, hold them, take care of them build up a trust that may never have been there with other adults, tell them they are valued and you will listen to them, as perhaps they were never listened to in your childhood. Hold out a hand to your inner child and slowly over time there will be a meeting and by this ordinary step you can renew and extraordinary part of yourself.
