I am still such a sucker, for Nissan Figaro and Pao Cars for seiko designer watches and other rubbish I don’t really need. Why is it the appearance of things is so beguiling, why in all my psychology and spirituality can I not see through to the soul, the essence of things, and be clear about who i am and what i want.
In my road to repoliticise myself, I read some critiques about the post marxist philospher ADORNO at the weekend, most of it I couldn’t get my head around, where once i would have lapped it up, but this but took my fancy…
The difference between essence and appearance entails the ideological effect of reification. For behind the reified appearance, lies the truth of the phantasmagoria of commodity production. This truth is that human beings, despite what they might think, are unfree; they live in an open air prison which the world is becoming, and people adapt to these conditions rather than oppose them.
Adorno says:
” In a state of unfreedom no one has a liberated consciousness”
So I am not free to make choices, I am part of a world which expects me to buy and design is reified, an abstract concept which is made material by the fact I/we are willing to pay for it, although its essence is meaningless.
We are daily being conned but we adapt to it by wearing the con with pride.
I apologise for this writing, whose appearance could seem very negative, after so much of what I write is overtly positive, however, it has a positive ooutlook, because if one person reads this and begins to think alittle more instead of just blandly accepting, then I am onto something
I have some caligrqaphy from Khalil Gibran on my wall it says:
“They say if you find a slave asleep, do not wake him, for he may be dreaming of freedom; but I say if you find a slave asleep, wake him and talk to him about freedom!
