Another view of healing

The talking Cure..whats your view of healing

I stopped seeing myself as a counsellor and began to revision myself as someone who offered a form of healing primarily based on talking but using the creative arts to help people revison, recentre and heal themselves.

Much of modern therapy be it psychotherapy, counselling or coaching starts from the premise that you need to be healed or perhaps cured of something or to grow in a new constructive and positive way, it then offers you a vision of the perfected person, the healed individual or the positively constructed ideal to aim for.

For thirty or more years I suffered with eczema, it was the blight of my life and I used steroid creams to control it. I took these steroid creams for 30 years until one day I approached the doctor and needed a repeat prescription and noticed his comment that you weren’t mean tot ake these creams for more than 7 days. Eventually things go so bad I approached a differnt kind of healer to help me…he was a homeopath, what he helped me understnad was a differnt way of seeing the body and its ease, or dis-ease. This Eczema was my body working well doing its best to rid me of other toxins, and beleive me you only have to look around at our environment and the food we consume to understnad what a toxic world we live in. The Ecsema wasn’t something I needed to suppress or get rid of it was a natural part of who I was, the fact being that none of us are perfect, and even the ones we think are perfect are filmed using brilliant lighting engineers and makeup and spend there whole waking time wondering whether they are perfect or not. That just isn’t possible for us all.

We have been sold the idea of perfection, the idea that its unacceptable to have spots or scars or body fat or uneven features or skin irritation or dandruff or baldness or any other blemish or diffeence and we are sold a thousand things to set this right. I just want to stop here and remark, that I do think it is worthwhile to maximise your potential, to treat yourself to good food and exercise and provide yourself with an environment that you feel comfortable with.

Anyhow as the homeopath taught me to look at myself in a new way, I also began my therapy training and the two things merged, and the uncontrollable eczema I had, now only flares up at times of great stress, or manifests itself from time to time as dry skin, and I know this is my body working well to help me, but also talking to me about what is needed…relaxation, a sauna, some aloe vera cream on my skin and I try to help by doing these things.

This process has changed my idea of ‘cure’..which the modern world sees as a removal of something, but homeopathy and psychosynthesis, have made me look at in a different way…psychosynthesis posits that everything has value and its use, sometimes a thing is created and given value to suit a a particular situation or event, but then the mind body or emotions get stuck using this thing for all times and events.

An example of this could be that my eczema originally came about because of something I had eaten as a child or been fed as a baby, but because the steroids suppressed it it kept coming back and then any toxins my body took in got the same kind of skin reaction, another example might be a child in a violent family has to stay aware and learns to lash out to defend itself, years later they still lash out if threatened and get the sack when ‘the boss’ has a go at them and they lash out at him/her.

So the kind of work I do does not just help you readdress who you are, but also your thoughts and feelings about yourself, what needs curing or healing and what healing means to you. It is both supportive and challenging.
