I am not an american but I was fascinated by the photos in these galleries from the bread and roses project of Unseen America , not all the photos are great but the idea behind it is fantastic.
I can remember as a drama student, visiting the national gallery and the portrait gallery in London to study costume, and realising the history of pictures and our understanding of them is really an understanding of a ruling class…except maybe for Breugel. So it is for photos, especially those we see in the Media…if they are not of some horror, they are inevitably of stars and rulers.
