So my daughter was twelve today, I was trying to remember what was important when I was 12, ok I was a boy and therefore things would have been a little different, however its the difference between 1973 and 2006 that fascinates me.
So what did I get her…a mobile phone (thats a cell phone to you guys in the USA) and she loved it…its an item of cool these days for 12 year olds. She gave me a big spontaneous hug I have never seen her look quite so happy and satisfied.
I wonder what I got for my twelfth birthday…probably a stick or something as the legend goes.
I find age a fascinating thing, how much store we put by it and how it defines us within western society. We have become so youth orientated, with so little respect given to theose in middle age unless they drive a Bentley. Money and Youth is all and the trappings that go with this are not object d’art but object t’ech.
