7 steps to the perfect interview

Job Interviews: 7 steps to a perfect interview

These stages give a great frame work and boost confidence in any interview

1. Introduce yourself, with a firm handshake, good eye contact and your name (they may be seeing 20 people that day and 20 the next, so make sure you clearly say your name)

2. Build rapport with the interviewer(s) talk about the weather, the area, the building, something you notice about the personn interviewing, be seen to listen and take an interest (take about 3 minutes)

3. Fact Find…Most interviews start with a “tell us some more about yourself, or pleae outline the salient points of your CV”, don’t fall for this!! Turn the interview around so you can find out what it is that they are looking for. e.g. As you can see from my Cv I have done X recently and also Y but before i go into more detail, can you tell me more about the role so i can talk about the areas of my work background that would be of benefit to you…then listen

4. Show you have listened by summarising the main points and reflecting these back to the interviewers.

5. Sell Yourself (in about 12minutes) match your skills to the requirements you have just heard. Do not be afraid to use the word “I”…do not say we got this project up and running, rather… I got this project up and running…

6. Tell them you are interested in the job, give them 2/3 points of interest and why you connect with them, if the idea of the job excites or enthuses you, tell them and tell them why; then ask them how do you think I measure up to your requirements.

7 Closure…ask them what the next stage is and when you can expect to hear, when you leave if possible shake hands again and thank them for their time.
