The bear
I often use the name of ‘the bear’, as a nickname or pen name and it is a name that has followed me around a bit, I got it from an exercise which helps you discover your native totem, in the Western Way or Western Tradition.

Curl up on the floor with a cushion or pillow, and lie on your RIGHT side (you can also do this in bed before sleep) realise that you stand at the door to another world and prepare yourself, by repeating this mantra ” I stand at the door with my staff and pack, may God/the Gods protect me there and back”
Concentrate on your breathing, breathe in peace and breath out on yourself strength and confidence, acknowledge those distractions around you and let them go, feel your body getting heavier and heavier and the sense that you are gently falling or floating down inside the trunk of a great oak, the tree of life, your family tree, be confident for this is your tree and eventually you fall to solid ground inside the bole of the tree.
a head of you is a door that you can see clearly, look at and remember it what it is like and what the door handle, then open it and walk through turn and look at this towering tree its branches, way above you and going out of sight, don’t go off exploring, because all you need is here… at the trunk of the tree, at about eye level is your totem, of course you have seen other symbols as you fell within the trunk, but this symbol here, whatever it may be is the root of these and your totem, it needs to be called into rememberance and brought back with you in memory.
If you have done this in the day now is the time to return and go back the way you came , through the door and returning up through the trunk until you find yourself back lieing on your bed or on the floor.
This is like a meditation and you can often fall asleep before you get to where you want to be, don’t be discouraged, but keep trying. Practice will also help you determine whether the totem is the true one placed there or one you are trying to put there.
