Simplicity

Simplicity is the property, condition, or quality of being simple or un-combined. It often denotes beauty, purity or clarity. Simple things are usually easier to explain and understand than complicated ones.

Being spiritual somehow depends on being free (or as free as possible) from dependence on material or external things for our security and happiness. Should we try and resisit the temptation to define ourselves by what we have? Perhaps this is what leads to protest at the G8 summits, in that a more caring spiritual society means we must be dissenters against what the modern world represents.

Simplicity means changing your attitudes as well as examining your possessions. We seem to live a much more complex life than people did 50, 100 or 150 years ago. And we certainly live a more complicated life defined by possessions than our contemporaries in many parts of the world. An aquantance of mine recently back from travelling on a boat rather than by plane, the old tramp steam ship method of old was touched by the simplicity and happines of places where they had little contact with the outside world, but took joy i what they did have.
We need to constantly challenge our way of life, asking ourselves what do I really need? and Does what I have need to be taken at the expense of others? Perhaps finally it would be better to stand to one side from fueling our desires and wants in the plethora of ads and sunday supplements, shops filled with things we don’t need and so on. Or shall we still continue like the fat man in the monty python sketch who on gorging himself and then being persuaded to have one little wafer thin mint….explodes.
