If Stones could talk
by J. Spencer
If stones could talk, this one
Might tell of journeys
Long forgotten, through lava, ice and mud
Of the march of mountains and tectonic plates
Recall how, starting sharp and hard with crystal clarity
Its surface polished smooth through time
Its end as legend has it
dug from the forehead of a philistine
But my son just dribbles with it along the path
Takes aim and shoots.
If fields could talk, that one
Might whisper of crops grown tall and brown
Of harvest cut with stone or scythe
The first machines and mouths to feed
Or it could murmur in among the stalks of corn
Of how I saved my daughters life
Or so she said, or was it me,
One rainy muddy autumn climbing the ploughed furrows
As deep and high as the downs escarpment.
If we could talk and listen too
We might learn more
Of each others lives and loves
And know each others smiles and grimaces
Without the need to fix or fade
But in amongst the rattle of the stone
And the rustle of the corn
Is only silence.
