Whose Cup are you filling

I once shared a flat with a lovely japanese woman, who took me out one evening for sushi and saki(rice wine) sushi was fine, but this is about the wine, as she told me that you never fill your own glass, always keep your companions glass full, expect your own to be full, and concentrate on ensuring your companion is looked after…

I am reminded of the sufi Rabia who when she heard preaching on the subject of jesus quote “knock and the door shall be opened, said you really should be teaching that actually the door has been open all along.

This is the principle of the saki, you don’t have to ask for your glass to be filled, it is always full. Its as I heard preached, you are already blessed, you don’t have to ask to be blessed, you just have to say thankyou and take your blessing.

Now I tried this, spent a whole week, telling myself i was blessed already, the director that was giving me a hard time started being charming to me and by the end of the week I had a raise, so the next week, i started being negative about things, by the end of the week i was ill, I mean physically sick.

Now if your glass is being filled, remember to be filling the glass of other people, some people don’t seem to be getting their glass filled and some seem to be getting theirs knocked over, what can you do about that? Kindness can help a lot with that, discard negative thoughts about people, like hes drinking that too quick or shes just wasted that. It seems to me that our job is take the abundance on this earth and ensure not that we have enough, but that the person next to us has enough.

Oh I can hear you now, either praising that, or criticising my naive idealism, well there’s truth in both, the paradox of life is some people are full already and we are trying to get them to take more, and some are empty and we haven’t even noticed or aren’t even willing to pour up.

In the end the choice is yours, accept your cup will be filled and set about filling the cup of others, what is stopping you?
