Politics, Poetry, Psychology, Rants and Recipes
An unnamed person wrote recently in my local newspaper about the difficulties of living in our high street, and washing vomit from the walls on Saturday morning. He described how he had moved from South London as it “was becoming a war zone”, and his answer now, that our Town is not as peaceful as he thought is to move to France. This not going to solve anything.
Our communities need rebuilding not evacuating.
In the last 25 years the attack on mutuality, trade unions, public services along with the privatisation of public utilites and the commercialisation of health and social services has broken down much of the collective spirit in our society.
We are often afraid to speak up for each other, in the face of disorder, because it seems we cannot rely on each others support.
The icon of the individual means we cut ourselves off and our young people from the responsibilities of living with others. I see it every day on the train with those plugged into their iPod cut off from any communication but irresponsibly delivering to the ears of everyone else a loud but tinny residue of their music…its the I’m alright Jack mentality gone mad….

There is often much criticism of the police, however I have found them nothing but helpful, the PR work and community liaison is very effective, but they are, no matter what anyone says, like the old fashioned road sweeper a bit thin on the ground.
What we need to do is rebuild and renew a sense of community and mutual repsonsibility.
However for the many young people who have grown up in an environemnt that has offered them little, disregarded their boredom and the lack of facilities, that has alienated them so many of them have no idea of care or responsibility for the feelings of others.
The pubs, clubs and eateries, cannot take all the balme for binge drinking and rowdy behaviour but they do have a responsibility to remind their clientele that they are in a residential area and to behave, as do we, to ourselves and our neighbours.
For the last 25 years the force of conservatism has been trying to persuade us there is no such thing as society, yet I would remind you all there is such a thing but it is not a seperate entitiy and we are all part of it and have responsibility for it, now is not the time to abandon ship to France
