iPod and anti-social behaviour

Anti Social

It seems that anti social behaviour is moving to the top of the agenda in British Politics.

But just why are people so selfish?

A few nights ago as I returned home from work on the train, I found myself sitting opposite someone with a so called personal stereo, you know the kind, the one whose earphones, emit a tinny scratchy version of whatever the person is listening to…next stop another person with an even worse personal stereo got on, this one was either so poor or so loud you could hear virtually everything. Of course if i had wanted to listen to the song, I would have had to do so between the beeps, rings and musical accompaniments of the passengers mobile phones.

“Making People Behave: Anti-social behaviour, politics and policy: The Creation and Enforcement of Anti-social Behaviour Policy” (Elizabeth Burney)

Then the man opposite me whilst still listening to his music starts a phone call on his cell/mobile phone, in a voice so loud that the lady next to him was visibly shocked and had to ask him to tone it down.

Why did I find it so difficult to tell these guys to turn their music down. The carriage was filled with besuited people reading good books and I would guess in good jobs where being articulate was important but we were cowed by 2 young men with loud stereos.

So now we want someone else to deal with this, I am sure what people really want is someone to deal with the drunkenness, street violence, vandalism..but it starts with this, with our inability to enforce basic courtesy and thought for others.

That is the root of it, and once you get away with one thing or see someone get away with unsocial behaviour of another kind for some it is a licence for more and as Kurt Vonnegut would say so it goes

Isn’t it time that within our families, and in our streets and communities we spoke up for good manners, courtesy, thought for others….I say this but my voice was silent…who can help me speak up?
