The Suit
I bought a suit for an interview and very nice it is too, actually I have a few suits. I never normally wear a suit, although I like to be smart and might wear a jacket. I certainly have been told I look good in a suit and tie but as I don’t wear one regularly they can make me feel uncomfortable, restricted and ill at ease, so why would you wear one to an interview where being relaxed, being yourself and feeling confident and at ease are all important? The answer is courtesy and respect, you wear a suit out of courtesy and respect for those that have taken the time and trouble to interview you.
The suit as its worn today probably originally derived from Ottoman/Turkish dress imported to europe, it has become ‘de rigeur’ for men and women and its hard to break away from or deconstruct though many have tried.
Having also interviewed with a view to employ others, I am aware dress is important. They say your minds made up as an interviewer in 10-20seconds of seeing the person…so much for equal opps interviews.
Perhaps we are stuck with this archaic outlook, that a suit and tie must be worn at interview, I mean hugo boss got rich on it, why would he want to change it.
